The Crazy Travel

How this blog paid for part of the trip

What did I live on during all those years on the road? It's one of the questions I get most, and part of the answer is this very blog. Here's how.

From zero, by breaking things

I started without a clue. I wanted a place to tell our travel stories, so I taught myself WordPress the way I learn almost everything: trial and error, one tutorial after another, breaking it and putting it back together a thousand times until it slowly started to click.

When the hobby became a trade

And then something I didn't expect happened: I got good enough at it to start building websites for companies while I travelled. With my laptop inside the tent or in a café in some corner of the world, those jobs paid for a good chunk of the road. Without meaning to, the blog had taught me a trade I could practise from anywhere with a plug and a bit of signal.

Not rich, not an expert — just resourceful

It's the same lesson the whole trip taught me. You don't need to be rich to travel the world, only resourceful — and you don't need an office job to pay for it either, just the curiosity and stubbornness to learn something you can carry on your back. With the right tools and the patience to wrestle with them, you can get almost anywhere.

Got questions, or want to know how I managed to work and travel at the same time? Drop me a line — happy to tell you.
