The rule that actually affects you in China. If you sleep in a residence or accommodation other than a hotel, the foreign national or their host must register with public security. And here's the gap: the national text doesn't explain how an unhosted wilderness pitch gets registered.

• This isn't a technicality: it's why wild camping in China is, administratively, a problem with no published solution. Confirm the place and procedure with the local authority.

If the place is officially designated as restricted to foreigners, prior approval is needed to enter. We label no area restricted without a current official instrument or notice.

The law lists ecotourism as an allowable public-service category but doesn't classify independent overnighting within it. You have to check the named park's live rule or its designated campsite.

A concrete, closed example: the Heizhugou National Nature Reserve and Scenic Area notice prohibits, without approval, entry for sightseeing, hiking, crossing, camping and photography.

The formal urban route: use a tent campsite run by a lawfully registered entity, which must complete the required procedures where the operation involves overnight accommodation.

During the high-risk period, entering a designated forest-grassland high-fire-risk zone requires approval from a county-level or higher people's government, and you must stay within the approved time, place and area, accepting supervision.

Don't use the land without the controller's authorisation. But note: the ownership clause doesn't establish that the owner's authorisation alone makes an informal pitch lawful.
