Wild camping in China: is it legal? (2026)

varies by area

What decides it in China isn't camping law: it's that you're foreign. Sleep outside a hotel and you or your host must register with public security — and the national text doesn't explain how a tent in open country gets registered. On top: Tibet requires an organised group, border management zones require procedures, and high-fire-risk zones need county-level approval.

This is not legal advice: it's what the official sources say, checked by hand, plus what I lived myself. Verify before you bet the fine on it.

The rule that hits you for being foreign

Sleeping outside a hotel: you must register

The rule that actually affects you in China. If you sleep in a residence or accommodation other than a hotel, the foreign national or their host must register with public security. And here's the gap: the national text doesn't explain how an unhosted wilderness pitch gets registered.

  • This isn't a technicality: it's why wild camping in China is, administratively, a problem with no published solution. Confirm the place and procedure with the local authority.

Tibet: no independent travel

The retained official guidance says foreign tourists may not travel independently in Tibet and must travel in an organised, planned group; a 2025 tourism notice additionally requires a Tibet entry confirmation letter. Neither authorises camping nor explains how an overnight would fit an approved itinerary.

Tibet border management zones

Foreigners and stateless persons must complete the applicable procedures before entering a border management zone. And a temporary alert zone is closed to everyone without public-security border or military border-force approval.

National parks: general control zone

The law lists ecotourism as an allowable public-service category but doesn't classify independent overnighting within it. You have to check the named park's live rule or its designated campsite.
