Wild camping in Cyprus: is it legal? (2026)

An easy and expensive confusion: a picnic site isn't a campsite because it has grills or facilities. You camp only where the location is also designated and operated as a campsite.

The useful part of Cyprus: the Forestry Department publishes a network of state-forest campsites. The official booklet lists Polis, Stavros tis Psokas, Kampi tou Kalogyrou, Platania and Troodos.

Listed for up to 60 tents or caravans and 150 people.

Listed for up to 80 tents or caravans and 300 people.

Both on state-forest land but managed by other agencies: the terms are the manager's.

A live detail worth having: since 3 June 2026 the entrances and emergency gates remain closed, opening only for arranged caravan removal. The closure holds until the Department announces reopening.

The other route: commercial tourist camping grounds and car campings with a current licence, complying with the law and First Schedule specifications.

You have to check ownership, access, beach, forest, nature-protection and local rules for the parcel. And we don't silently extend the forest-campsite rule to all public land.

The owner's consent alone isn't complete legal permission: commercial-operation, planning, forest, coast and nature-protection controls may apply.

The Department of Forests says it plainly: camping in the forest is allowed only at camping sites. That closes the state-forest question — though it doesn't resolve sleeping without a tent.

Forest Law article 37 carries an authorisation-or-Director's-permit qualifier for temporary constructions. No official source we located confirms that this operates as a traveller-facing permit route for a camping tent, so we don't sell it as one.

Sleeping without erecting a tent or structure is unresolved. Closures, fire rules, reserve and Natura controls and posted restrictions still apply.

The Minister may regulate or prohibit entry to a specified state-forest area where conservation may be endangered. The notice is published in the Official Gazette, posted in the area and states its period — and breaching it reaches €5,000 and up to a year.

Fine: Up to €5,000 and/or up to one year’s imprisonment (Forest Law art. 44(3), for breaching an art. 44(1) entry notice).

The highest figure in the whole guide, and with reason. A visitor may light a food-preparation fire only in specifically permitted and arranged places within organised picnic areas, with precautions and the means to fully extinguish it. Article 32, as replaced by Law 24(I)/2025, reaches €25,000.

• The two-kilometre zone around state forest falls under the same article.

Fine: Up to €25,000 and/or up to five years’ imprisonment (Forest Law art. 32, replaced by Law 24(I)/2025: lighting a fire in state forest or the two-kilometre boundary zone contrary to subsection (1)). It is the highest figure in the guide.

Within the Polis–Yialia special area of conservation, placing a tent, caravan or similar shelter anywhere on Limni beach is prohibited from 15 May to 30 September. It's a named-beach, named-season rule, not a Republic-wide coastal rule.

In Akamas National Forest Park camping is limited to approved and organised campsites — and the Department's 2026 announcement specifically flags increased unauthorised camping there.

The Minister may issue a management and nature-protection order for a specific special area of conservation, which may prohibit activities. You have to look at the site's order.

Unresolved, with traffic and parking rules applying regardless. It doesn't cover licensed car camping, a vehicle over ten days in state forest, or protected-site restrictions.

The offence requires driving a motor vehicle off a forest road and thereby damaging vegetation. We don't turn it into a blanket conclusion about forest-road movement.

Fine: Up to €5,000 and/or up to one year’s imprisonment (Forest Law art. 37: an unauthorised person without a Director’s permit who leaves a forest road and damages vegetation or soil).

Placing or abandoning a vehicle or machine in state forest for more than ten days is an offence. Note the flip side: the provision doesn't authorise shorter stays, it only punishes long ones.
