The Central Asian country that best publishes its procedures: the border-strip pass is requested online, takes ten working days and is free; Baikonur, by contrast, wants a foreigner's application 55 days in advance. In protected areas, an established place and your proof of payment. In state forest you may be present free and permitless — but that isn't the same as being allowed to sleep.

This is not legal advice: it's what the official sources say, checked by hand, plus what I lived myself. Verify before you bet the fine on it.
My nights in Kazakhstan
The border: the layer that actually decides
The wider zone: your ID is enough
A distinction that saves grief: the wide border zone is not the strip. For the zone, a foreigner enters on valid identity documents — the current article doesn't impose the strip pass. Carry them throughout.
- The zone runs through the frontier districts adjoining China, and 25 km along the Russian, Kyrgyz, Uzbek and Turkmen frontiers and the Caspian coast.

Confirm first that your point isn't inside the narrow strip: everything changes there and the pass is required.

Foreign occupants need valid documents. Sleeping inside doesn't turn the zone into the strip, but neither does it create land or parking permission.

The strip: ten working days, free
Kazakhstan is one of the few countries on this belt that publishes the procedure with numbers: the National Security Committee Border Service pass is requested through the digital-government portal, the current service term is ten working days, and it's free. You state place, purpose and dates, and it's issued for the period requested, up to one calendar year.
- The strip is 2,000 m along China and 100 m along Russia, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan, or to the engineering-barrier line where the Resolution so provides.
- The pass resolves entering and staying. It doesn't resolve the parcel: to pitch you still need the owner or manager and any protected-area permission.

Baikonur: 55 days in advance
A Spanish citizen is a foreign citizen under the bilateral Agreement and needs an approved application before entering: it must be filed at least 55 days ahead, reviewed within 45, and the result communicated at least 10 days before the visit.
- Kazakh and Russian citizens use a much shorter timetable: 10 days to apply, 5 to review.
- Admission doesn't authorise an outdoor tent. Use arranged accommodation unless you're given an express site answer.

The Agreement defines a tourist as an organised visitor travelling on dates and routes agreed with the authorities. A self-directed bivouac doesn't fit.

Protected areas
Protected areas: an established place and your receipt
The national OOPT visitor rules are clear on their own terms: making camps and pitching tents outside places established for the purpose is on the not-allowed list. And keep your proof of payment until the visit ends, because it's the basis of the visit.
- Strict state nature reserves admit visitors only for scientific and environmental-education purposes: this recreational route doesn't apply there.

Forest and ordinary ground
The forest fund: free entry, no permit
Kazakhstan's Forest Code allows presence in the state forest fund free and without permits for rest, recreation and tourism. That sounds like a lot — but it doesn't expressly decide a one-night tent, and we won't stretch it.
- Local executive bodies may prohibit physical presence during high fire danger or pest-control operations.

Registration, visas and closed areas
Spanish passport: 30 days without registration
An ordinary Spanish passport is visa-free for up to 30 days. And staying within those 30, you don't fall into the self-registration trigger the law reserves for stays longer than 30 calendar days.
- If you have a host, it's the host who must notify internal affairs within three working days of your arrival.
- None of this legalises the place you pitch.
