Wild camping in Moldova: is it legal? (2026)

Individuals may freely access state and local-authority forest at their own responsibility, and free use includes recreation. That's as far as it goes: it doesn't say tent, fire or night.

The current Forest Code names recreation, but not an individual's tent or camp. We don't promote one word into the other.

In private forest you may freely enter for passage or short recreation. The owner may restrict that by notifying the local authority in writing and posting information boards.

• We don't treat "short recreation" as express permission to sleep.

A forest manager may limit or prohibit access, including in special-protection forests, on notice to the local authorities. The grounds are listed: fire prevention, infectious-disease outbreaks and protection of regeneration.

Comply with fire-safety rules, and don't cut or damage, disturb shelters and nests, or pollute. It's a duties clause: it doesn't say where you may light a fire or sleep.

Anyone organising cultural, sporting, recreational or tourism activities on forest land must coordinate with the local authorities and conclude a contract. It's for organisers, not for you alone with your tent.

In a Moldovan scientific reserve every form of public recreation is prohibited, as are the creation of recreation places and the presence of outsiders. A recreational tent falls squarely inside.

A structureless bivouac is still public recreation. The prohibition is comprehensive and doesn't distinguish gear.

Movement outside common-use routes and parking outside arranged places are prohibited. But the outsider-access prohibition still governs separately.

In a national park's integral-protection zone every recreational and economic activity is prohibited; only scientific research under an approved programme is permitted.

Zone B is for visiting scenic places and short recreation, and may contain paths, bad-weather shelters and fire places. What the statute doesn't do is place campgrounds there — so the tent isn't inferred.

Zone C is for long-duration recreation, and the statute does permit placing campgrounds and bivouac clearings. Note: permitting facilities to be placed isn't permission to pitch anywhere in the zone.

Vehicles may only enter forest land on roads, and the manager determines how. It doesn't mean every road is open.

Parking on forest land is permitted only in places specially arranged for it.

The Code regulates where you access and where you park, not whether you may sleep inside. Parking properly isn't permission to overnight.
