Thailand has a genuine camping network inside its parks, with published tariffs — but the base rule is simple: you pitch only in an area designated by a competent park officer, and you follow their orders, capacities, closures and bookings.

An overnight stay without a tent, or by any unlisted method, must also happen in an officer-designated area.

Sleeping in a parked vehicle, trailer or motorhome, only in an officer-designated area. With entry, route, time, inspection and parking rules on top.

A concrete figure almost nobody publishes: an ordinary tourism, nature-study or overnight visit may not remain in the national park for more than five days on each occasion.

The same tent at a marine or island site costs THB 80 per person per night. The tariff existing doesn't prove every island allows camping: check whether the named site is open and bookable.

The tariff lists THB 300 per vehicle per night for a non-towed motorhome and 600 for a towed one. Where the service is actually provided — and the vehicle must still be in an officer-designated overnight area.

A concrete example of how it works: the Hat Thai Mueang camping area is booked through the DNP page while booking is open; you bring your tent, pick a pitch to suit its size and respect the portal's party limit.

A small, very Thai rule: in camping and accommodation areas you don't prepare food that creates disturbing smoke or odour. The DNP notice gives making tea or coffee and boiling instant noodles as examples.

Wildlife sanctuaries are a different animal from national parks: you must obtain a competent officer's permission before entering, and then comply with the Director-General's regulation and staff orders.

Even with the entry permit, you don't enter between sunset and sunrise unless a competent officer authorises it.

Beyond parks and sanctuaries sits the national reserved forest, and there we found no rule resolving a one-night tent stay. Statutory permits, concessions and authorisations run separately.

Whoever accommodates you — the householder, owner, possessor of the dwelling or hotel manager — must notify immigration of your stay through the official TM30 process. It's the host's duty, not the traveller's.

That's the gap: the TM30 service is designed for accommodation operators, hotel managers, landlords and household possessors. What happens when there is none of those, it doesn't resolve.

Same gap, same conclusion: with no host, no identified procedure.

The same for anyone sleeping in the vehicle.
