Wild camping in Uzbekistan: is it legal? (2026)

varies by area

One flat rule and a lot of silence. In a state reserve every activity except authorised research is prohibited — and camping is an activity, whatever gear you carry. Beyond that, visitable areas tie you to route, site and timing, the forest recognises only "general presence", and the three-day registration is an administrative layer that legalises no ground.

This is not legal advice: it's what the official sources say, checked by hand, plus what I lived myself. Verify before you bet the fine on it.

State reserve: everything banned but research

Uzbekistan's protected-areas law bans every activity in a state reserve except authorised research. There's no recreational exception list to hunt for: camping isn't among the permitted uses, and the ban is neutral as to what gear you carry.

  • The same applies to the reserve zone of a nature park or a biosphere reserve.

A recreational overnight vehicle stay is an activity, and it isn't among the authorised ones.

Visitable protected area: route, place and time

Outside the reserve core, the model rules expressly prohibit tents in unauthorised places. What governs is the assigned route, the site, the timing and the local regime — so the answer always belongs to the specific area, not the country.

Uzbek forest: general presence, nothing more

Citizens may be present in forests under general use, subject to legislation. From there to pitching a tent is a leap the law doesn't make.

  • Use of state forest plots for ecotourism is permitted through its own formal route — which isn't the lone traveller's.

The border: the layer that actually decides

The three-day registration

A foreign visitor normally registers within three working days. We state it as an administrative layer: it doesn't establish the legality of the public ground you sleep on, and we won't present it as if it did.

Vehicle and registration — Uzbekistan

There's provision for independent travellers living in ground transport, but that doesn't establish the overnight is lawful at the location.
