Wild camping in Vietnam: is it legal? (2026)

This is the precise bridge the official texts support: a tourist campsite is an accommodation category, and whoever manages it declares the foreign guest to the local police, electronically or on paper. There, everything fits.

• The campsite must operate as a lawful accommodation business and satisfy the applicable security, fire, environmental and other requirements.

A concrete example of the managed route: register in advance with the park management board and use only the camping activity it currently offers, with its route, guide and fire instructions.

• It's official tourism material and it changes. Reconfirm with the board before relying on it.

Vietnam doesn't have the Laos rule — foreigners required to stay only in registered accommodation. What exists is a temporary-stay declaration duty channelled through whoever manages the accommodation. That isn't a prohibition on sleeping out: it's an unresolved question about how such a night would be declared.

• The statutory accommodation definition includes private houses and other lawful accommodation, but the opened texts don't classify an unhosted tent site.
