From Spain to New Zealand for 5€ day

On Thursday I attended a travel conference in Zaragoza where a Cantabrian couple shared their experiences and adventures that took place during 4 years of travel. They departed from Santillana del Mar and crossed Europe, Middle East, Africa, Asia and Oceania to reach New Zealand. Almost everything by land and boat, just a couple of short flight when there was no alternative.

These experiences sleeping in the side of the road because no driver picked you up that night, walking around the city looking for a cheap place to sleep or some hidden and safe place where to sleep for free on the streets, the review and bargain for any transportation, food or shelter that you get paid; all this was reminding me my own travels.

I was particularly shocked by their courage. They did not care possible war or conflict zones if they had to crossed it, they did it very pleasantly. They were trying by all means slip into expensive tourist attractions, they even spend the night in the Roman architectural remains in Turkey. In many of their stories I felt like I was in front of a mirror, their eyes had the same glow I feel when I’m hitchhiking, when I am on the road. A few weeks and I am already missing it so much.

As any traveler who spend time on the road, their main interest is people. Because while the architecture and nature is attractive, what really hooks you while traveling is getting to know cultures and people, that astonishing ease which allow you to get in contact and create a link with completely different people in remote locations.

A few days to catch the flight to Malaysia and I’m really looking forward to do it, this long month in Spain is driving me crazy. And watch at these guys talking about their experiences doesn’t help at all.

A lovely couple whom I had the opportunity to chat with, during and after the conference. I’m sure that sooner or later our paths will cross again, because after this kind of experience is not able to live a sedentary life in your hometown.

Anyone interested in the adventures of David and María can follow their blog, the photos of this entry are a good example about what you will find.

Their trip ended as it began. When they came back they got married… and they hitchhiked from the Palace to the party!
