Are Sony's new DSLR cameras ideal for travel?

Pablo//2 min

Nikon and Canon are the big names in professional cameras, but Sony's new DSLRs — with their translucent mirror technology and built-in GPS geotagging — are genuinely tempting. The lightning-fast shutter, continuous autofocus even in the worst lighting conditions, and the ability to see your photos pinned on a map make this new Sony range an ideal companion for the travelling photographer.

The translucent mirror technology does away with the mechanical mirrors inside traditional cameras, eliminating the slowdown that comes with capturing images in quick succession. Thanks to this approach, Sony cameras can record Full HD video while maintaining accurate, continuous autofocus throughout.

I currently use a Nikon, and geotagging my photo library is an absolute pain. Every option on the market requires either a camera accessory or a GPS gadget that has to be synced with the camera clock, then processed and tagged on the computer afterwards. With Sony's new DSLRs, the GPS tag is embedded in each photo at the moment you press the shutter — you just transfer them to your computer and upload them to Google+ or Flickr and they're already on the map. Think of the time it would save me.

I've only had the chance to play with a Sony A37, but its build quality is obvious from the first moment you pick it up. I've already seen that solidity in my other recent Sony purchase: the Sony Action Cam.

Wouldn't you love a professional camera with near-instant autofocus and capture speed, and the guarantee that your work ends up on the map? In which moments during your travels would you most want one of these Sony cameras? What do you think of Sony's new lens range?
